Your Comfort Zone is Holding You Back

Human beings love comfort. We like habits and routines and safety, and we tend to repeat the things that make us feel like we’re in control. For example, If I miss yoga on Saturday, I’m out of sorts for the rest of the day. I like that habit, it comforts me and makes me feel safe.

The same thing happens in our career. We hold onto things that are comfortable at the cost of future opportunities that would stretch and expand us.

If you’ve found yourself in a rut in your career, it’s often because we’re too comfortable. That comfort zone has become smothering, and we’re not learning and growing. And most people get in ruts because they’re afraid to fail. Fear keeps us small and moving at a slow pace because we’re nervous to stretch too far and fall.

But getting out of your comfort zone is refreshing and energizing, and it’s a really great way to revive your career. If you step out of what you’ve known forever into something that you might not have thought you could do, you’ll feel powerful and strong even when you’re still fumbling a bit.

The key is not to expect yourself to be perfect. Make the mistakes, learn from them, and put yourself back in the game. Failure and mistakes give you a base to build off of. Stretching a little gives you a wider view of your industry and your company, which will only help you in your company.

I know it’s scary to go out on a limb, and I’m not asking you to pretend that it’s not. Take that step, make mistakes, learn, ask for help, and start getting some wins, and it will change your career totally. It’s a game-changer. You just have to take the step out of your comfort zone.

So take a look at yourself and your career and assess where you’re playing small. To what extent are you in your comfort zone in your career?

If you’re feeling stuck, it’s likely you’re pretty far into that comfort zone, so take a small step! Raise your hand in a meeting, volunteer to lead a project. Do something a little scary. I promise you’ll get hooked after that, and growth will become a lifestyle, not something that frightens you.
